In IPL auctions because the strategy different owners use to build up their team has always caught my eye. This time was no different. While some owners went hard for the players they wanted to get at the start, some waited for others to exhaust their purse.

  1. When no one picked and shown interest on Indian Ranji star Players like Rajneesh Gurbani , Siddhesh Lad who has done reasonably well and star of this year Ranji season.
  2. When player like Rahul, Maxi and Pandey gone for 11 crore and 9 crore respectively. They don't deserve this much price it's too much for them. They are not even consistent enough and struggled a lot in scoring runs whereas worlds t20 best batsman right now Colin Munro only got 2 crore.
  3. No one has shown interest on bowlers like Southee, Ish Sodhi,Johnson, Hazelwood,Zampa,Mcclenghan and they all went unsold. Even last year IPL 10 emerging player Basil Thampi went for only 85 lakhs. He deserves more than that.
  4. Sunrisers this year as well managed to get good bowling side with Bhuvi, Rashid Khan, Siddharth Kaul, Basil Thampi , T. Natrajan, Khaleel Ahmed.
  5. I was quite surprised as what is the strategy of chennai by picking only 30+ of age players. This t20 is more a young blood game. What they will do after 2 to 3 years as most of their players are above 30 and their core team will break so this is a foolish idea by investing so much on these old guns.
  6. I am highly disappointed with the pick of Kings 11 punjab I think they are going to be next RCB.
  7. I am amazed with the strategy of KKR as they are looking for building a young team that's why they invested so much on young blood which is good.
  8. Rajasthan Royals which used to give a lots of chance to unknown stars went for proven t20 players on the basis of current form which is good I think with Stokes Short, Archer, Butler.
  9. It's good to see that RCB left out Gayle and invested some money on bowlers as well. With Umesh Yadav, Khejroliya, Chahal, Saini and Woakes there bowling looks well balanced
gautam gambhir delhi 2.8 cr

Only 2.8 crores for a player like Gautam Gambhir? That is so wrong on so many levels. He's the man who helped a team like KKR (no big names) in winning 2 FREAKING IPL trophies and even led them to a Champions trophy final! After yesterday's auction, it's crystal clear that Gautam Gambhir is the most underrated player of recent times.

Also, teams bidding aggressively for a player like Dinesh Karthik?

So this IPL once again proved that your current form does not matter.

These players are best in their game

  1. Joe root : One of the most reliable batsmen can play as both agressor and setting the innings .
  2. Eoin Morgan : England's T20 caption . destructive batsman ( hard to see him getting unsold when teams like KKR are struggling to find a captian.
  3. Samuel Badree: Superb spinner one that can provide big breakthroughs .
  4. Hashim Amla: Last year also he was unsold he got in at last time and proved to be best for his team.
  5. Jhye Richardson : Man in form excellent death bowler and quick too .
  6. Adam Zampa: Apart from his skills to exploit the spinner friendly pitches he is also a known slogger.
  7. James Faulkner: He is the most valuable player from this list an excellent opening bowler, middle over bowler, death bowler. Very economical, And a player who.can win matches from most hopeless situations by his batting. Rajasthan royals should have kept him atleast at his base price instead of players like Zaher Khan
  8. Even a bowler as good as Morne Morkel is unsold (couldn't believe that it happened)
  9. All these players were not bought by any franchises even at their base price. They went to spend money on players like Manish Pandey, K Gowtham, inexperienced nagarkoti, 11 cr for unadkat shocks me. 8 crores for Krunal Pandya also.

CSK’s strategy

I was watching IPL auctions because the strategy different owners use to build up their team has always caught my eye. This time was no different. While some owners went hard for the players they wanted to get at the start, some waited for others to exhaust their purse.

Of all these teams, CSK in particular surprised me with their tactics. While some of their moves looked average, others were quite impressive. Let’s talk about it:

Average Moves

  • CSK purchased the maximum players they could and still had 6.5 cr left which they cannot use anyway. Can’t understand their thought-process.
  • They have a lot of wicket-keepers in their side, which isn’t going to be too helpful, especially when not all of them are known for their exceptional batting skills. Having one back-up keeper would have been enough. Their wicket-keepers include: Sam Billings, Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni and Jagadeesan Narayan.
  • Buying players who are relatively old. While most team wanted to build a young core of players looking at long term, they went for a lot of experience (pun intended). They did make up for it later with some young blood, but they could have done better. Also, buying more local players can help with better crowd support and they have only Murali Vijay.

Impressive Move

Their most impressive move, and slightly risky, was to let go of some players and save their purse till the end. Towards the end, only three teams — RR, CSK and KXIP had in excess of 15 cr. Firstly, CSK let go of Unadkat as the price went high and that led to RR depleting their wallet to less than 5 cr. Later, it was a battle between KXIP and CSK to fight for Andrew Tye, which both were saving their purse for.

And when it finally came to him, CSK let him go too, which could hurt them but at the same time finished their only competition in KXIP. At that moment, every other team except them had 5 cr or lesser. And it was quite clear that if some new player came up in the auction, no body would be able to challenge CSK for a price. And then everyone saw what happened.

CSK bought a lotttt of players, all of them cheaply, most notable of them were — Mark wood (1.5 cr), Sam billings (1 cr) and Lungi Ngidi (50 lacs). All of these buys were a steal at the amounts at which CSK got them.

Having leverage till the end is a huge advantage and it showed.
